چکیده

We describe the results of numerical simulations of the dynamics of the boundary layer (BL) between the accretion disk and the surface of a non-magnetic white dwarf (WD) for different viscosities which corresponds to different stages for dwarf novae burst cycles. The simulations cover the inner part of the accretion disk, the BL, and the upper atmosphere of the star. The high viscosity case, which corresponds to a dwarf nova in outburst, shows a optically thick BL which after one Keplerian rotation period (tK=19s) extends more than 30 degrees to either side of the disk plane. The BL is optically thick and thus occludes part of the star. The low viscosity case, which corresponds to a dwarf nova in quiescense, also shows a BL, but it is optically thin. Subject headings: accretion, accretion disks – binaries: close — novae, cataclysmic variables — white dwarfs — methods: numerical

Simulations of the Boundary Layer Between a White Dwarf and its Accretion Disk

Using a 2.5D time-dependent numerical code we recently developed, we solve the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations to determine the structure of the boundary layer between the white dwarf and the accretion disk in non-magnetic cataclysmic variable systems. In this preliminary work, our numerical approach does not include radiation. In the energy equation, we either take the dissipation fu...

Fe Kα line in hard X-ray emitting symbiotic stars

The 6.4 keV iron emission line is typically created by irradiation of the neutral (or low ionized) iron by a hard X-ray source. Whereas the 6.7 and 7.0 keV emission lines are mainly produced by photoionization and collisional excitation in hot plasma, the 6.4 keV fluorescence line is typically a signature of either reflection from an accretion disc or absorption. We have surveyed the emission u...

X-ray Observations of the Boundary Layer in Dwarf Novae at Low Accretion Rates

We present a spectral analysis of XMM-Newton data of ten dwarf novae, nine of which were observed during a quiescent state. The X-ray spectra indicate the presence of a hot, optically thin plasma with a temperature distribution consistent with a simple, isobaric cooling flow. The likely origin of the X-ray emission is cooling plasma in the boundary layer settling onto the white dwarf. Using a c...

On the occurrence of dwarf nova outbursts in post novae

We show that irradiation of the accretion disc by the white dwarf limits the occurrence of dwarf nova outbursts in post nova accretion discs. After the nova explosion, the white dwarf has to cool for up to ∼ 100 yr – depending on the orbital period (i.e., disc size) and the temperature of the white dwarf after the nova-eruption – before the disc can begin producing dwarf nova outbursts. During ...

The EUV and X-ray Emission of Nonmagnetic Cataclysmic Variables

Recent results are presented and discussed regarding the EUV and X-ray emission of nonmagnetic cataclysmic variables. Emphasis is given to high accretion rate systems (novalike variables and dwarf novae in outburst), and to a number of apparent discrepancies between observations and the theory of the boundary layer between the accretion disk and the surface of the white dwarf. Discussed are EUV...
